Dorrell has been UCLA’s coach the last five seasons. He had a 35-27 record, highlighted by a 10-2 season in 2005. The Bruins began this season with 20 returning starters, 25 seniors but managed only a 6-6 season after a 24-7 loss to USC on Saturday. Yesterday, the Bruins were invited to the Las Vegas Bowl, where they will face Brigham Young, a rematch of a Sept. 8 regular season matchup that the Bruins won, 27-17. Coach Karl Dorrell’s days as UCLA’s football coach appeared to be numbered today amid reports that a search for his successor is under way. Sources familiar with the athletic department said that Dorrell will be fired and that a short list of candidates has been assembled. UCLA officials may wait until the Bruins’ team banquet Wednesday before making an announcement. Boise State Coach Chris Petersen is said to be the first choice of Athletic Director Dan Guerrero, with Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach and former NFL coach Steve Mariucci considered among the other top candidates. last_img read more
