The most signal example of this vigour is the Abbeyfeale Community Council (ACC) which works with a dozen stakeholders – State agencies, voluntary and private enterprise – to advance the town.Maurice O’Connell, a North Kerry native who put his roots down in the town 20 years ago, has served as council chairperson since this voluntary body was established in 2016.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up “I am very clear about being chairperson and not chairman as that brings it home that the  position is open to everyone,” Maurice jokes, hoping to clamber off this lofty perch soon enough. The Council’s hard work has brought immense reward to the hinterland and feeds into many regional bodies.“The town is going through a multi million euro transition with a new traffic plan. As part of that, Limerick City and County  Council (LCCC) have bought the building next to where the E-Hub is going to go. That will be turned into a car park and a new civic space,” he reports.“Then in about five years from now, there is a plan for a ring road from town to Newcastle West. This will take the heavy traffic off and allow people a safer, more enjoyable life.“It won’t be a full blown bypass and that’s important, to distinguish the difference. We are keeping it close to the town if people want to come in.“Last year, we were overall runners up in the JP McManus-sponsored Going for Gold competition and this year, Abbeyfeale has been shortlisted for Pride of Place. We will know later on in the year how we have done in that.”Abbeyfeale is shortlisted by LCCC for one of the categories in this 26-county competition that rewards incentivised communities.“We will go forward to the national awards of Pride of Place.“That follows through then as ACC was closely involved with a project with the City and County Council’s Healthy Limerick initiative. We were shortlisted for a national award there for a project we did around Abbeyfeale health with them.”There’s more ‘best in practice’ to report, evidence of the town’s rising profile and fortunes, with Abbeyfeale Town Park’s win this Wednesday 17 of worldwide status – the Green Flag Award for excellence in presentation.Continue reading below…The International Green Flag Award  sees this park added to a list around the world that are deemed to be of exceptional standard.“It was Abbeyfeale Community Council that helped them with the application and to source some funding to prepare for same,” Maurice confirms.“I am absolutely thrilled with Green Flag win as for me, it represents all the hard work of volunteers over the past 20 years, the committee and obviously those in the Community Employment Scheme, without whom it would not be a success.“Tidy Towns is involved with all the groups, along with ourselves. And the town is a fantastic example of the work and the effort they put in over the last number of years.”“A lot of the progress that is ongoing and planned for Abbeyfeale is down to the very good relationship between ourselves and LCCC, Innovate Limerick and West Limerick Resources. We’ve done quite well.”“Do you know about the Greenway? Because another few million is after being released for the people of Kerry.”The Greenway has been magnetising tourists for a while now. It used to be called the Great Southern railway line, the 40km that used to run from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale.“Kerry County Council has now been awarded around €3million to extend it into Listowel, which is the next extension and eventually it will extend back to Tralee. The old railway tracks have been taken up and it is already a major tourist attraction for cyclists and walking groups but the connection to Kerry is important.” WhatsApp TAGSAbbeyfealeabbeyfeale town featureCommunitylimerick city countyNewsSpecial Featurevideo Previous articleNew folk direction for Danny VaughnNext article101 Limerick announced as Finalists for the 2019 Bar of the Year Awards Rose Rushehttp://www.limerickpost.ieCommercial Features and Arts Editor at Limerick Post Limerick on Covid watch list Shannon Airport braced for a devastating blow Print Vicky calls for right to die with dignitylast_img read more

Temple Grandin

first_imgTemple Grandin, world-renowned animal agriculture consultant and advocate for the autism community, is no stranger to overcoming challenges. So when Grandin stepped to the podium and told a crowd of young people to think their problems through and face what scares them, they listened.“There are two things I used to be scared of: public speaking and airplanes,” Grandin told a crowd of more than 350 young people gathered at the University of Georgia Livestock Arena on Dec. 4.Ironically, those two fears — flying around the country and talking to crowds — have become major parts of Grandin’s lifestyle, a detail that was not lost on the students.Organized by UGA Cooperative Extension’s Jackson County 4-H Club, Grandin’s talk focused on the basics of humane cattle handling. She also spoke about her journey as a person on the autism spectrum and her career as a champion for better practices in the livestock agriculture.Geared toward benefiting both working producers and students who are at the beginning of their livestock showing careers the event with Grandin was organized by Ali Merk, Jackson County 4-H agent, who admitted that when she invited Grandin to speak, she never imaged Grandin would accept.“Having an internationally recognized and culturally celebrated individual offer to interact on such an intimate level is beyond anything I could have expected,” said Merk, who owns a farm and manages a herd of cattle with her husband in addition to leading her county’s 4-H program. “We, as educators, have to stop highlighting what students are deficient in, but rather build upon what they are good at. In 4-H, we have programming for every child and mind, and that is confirmed to change lives through the example of Dr. Grandin.”Before the event, 4-H students had the opportunity to join the “Champions for Change Challenge” by reading one of Grandin’s books or watching the eponymous movie about her life, then completing a service project. Those who completed the challenge were invited to meet Grandin before the event. The event reached beyond just the members of the Jackson County 4-H Club, said Merk, adding that Grandin’s talk drew more than 400 participants who were inspired both personally and professionally by her words. For more information about how Georgia 4-H inspires Georgia students every day, visit georgia4h.org.last_img read more

Could Amazon become a game changer of Premier League broadcasting?

first_img Spotlight ups matchday commentary reach and capacity for new EPL Season  August 21, 2020 StumbleUpon Footstock signs Chris Kamara as new brand ambassador August 18, 2020 Share Submit Premier League looks to broadcast every behind-closed-door fixture August 28, 2020 Related Articles From the 2019-2020 season, it appears that Amazon is aiming to become a major new force in the world of Premier League TV rights. A whole host of digital media outlets are looking to test the waters with a bid for Premier League content, however after its purchase of the ATP tennis tournaments, Amazon looks more likely to succeed with an audacious football bid than Facebook, Google or Twitter. It’s anticipated that the next auction will take place in 2018, with speculation suggesting that  Amazon has signalled its intention to bid for a significant part of the rights. The move would follow on from approaches by Amazon and Netflix to host behind the scenes documentaries based around Premier League clubs.Significantly for English football is the financial capability of Amazon could lead to another hike in TV revenue for Premier League clubs, something that was unlikely to have happened had the bidding process remained a two horse race between Sky and BT.Having recently purchased Whole Foods for $13.7bn Amazon continues to go from strength to strength, the Seattle based company was even voted as the world’s third most innovative company by Forbes.Furthermore, Amazon has proven itself to be a capable streaming service with the success of Amazon Prime, which is in direct competition with Netflix to be the most powerful streaming service. The financial capabilities of Amazon mean that Sky and BT are unable to compete, which could lead to the Premier League broadcasting rights being blown wide open.In the first half of 2017, Sky’s operating profits were down 6%, which was largely a result of the 83% increase in its Premier League football bill that saw  Sky paying an eye-watering paying £11million a match.Unsurprisingly, it’s something that has left the broadcaster wary of going back into the market for Premier League rights, meaning that when the current deal expires there is a potential gap in the market for an alternative digital outlet.
