GVC boosted by online growth as revenue climbs in first half

first_img GVC Holdings has cited growth within its online gambling business as the main reason behind a 5% year-on-year increase in net gaming revenue during the six months to June 30, 2019, despite a decline in revenue within the operator’s UK retail arm.Although the operator has opted not to publish financial figures, it has revealed that total online gaming revenue increased by 17% on a year-on-year basis in the first half.GVC noted growth across all areas of its online arm, with online gaming revenue up 17% and sports betting 18%. Online sports wagers were also up 13% year-on-year.However, it was not such positive news for GVC’s retail business – which includes the Ladbrokes and Coral land-based network – with UK retail revenue down by 10% year-on-year.This was primarily the result of new regulations in the UK for fixed-odds betting terminals. Laws came into effect on April 1 cutting the maximum state on such machines from £100 to just £2.Despite the UK decline, GVC did highlight growth within its European retail business, with revenue in the six-month period up 7%, boosted by an 11% rise in sports wagers. The first-half results were boosted by a strong performance by GVC’s online arm in the second quarter, during which total net gaming revenue was up 3% year-on-year.Q2 online revenue climbed 16% – boosted by an 18% rise in revenue from online sports betting – but it was the same story for UK retail, where revenue slipped by 19% year-on-year due to the FOBT stake change. On the other hand, European retail revenue increased 12% in the period.Despite the drop in UK retail revenue, chief executive Kenny Alexander remains optimistic about this area of the business, saying that he believes the operator is in a strong position to increase its market share.“Trading in Q2 remained very strong with the online division delivering continued material market share gains across all major territories,” he said.“This outperformance is driven by the sustainable competitive advantages of our proprietary technology platform, leading product, cutting edge marketing and leading brands, all delivered with an unrivalled understanding of the markets in which we operate.“The transition to a post £2 stakes-cut environment in UK Retail is progressing very well and we believe the Ladbrokes Coral estate is best-placed to take market share.”Away from the UK, Alexander noted significant movement in the US, where he said GVC’s Roar Digital joint venture with MGM Resorts is on-track for its full online launch ahead of the NFL American football season in September.During the first half, GVC was also granted licences in Mississippi and Nevada, while Roar Digital received a transactional waiver to conduct business in New Jersey. In addition, Alexander said that clarification on new sports betting licences in Germany, which is expected next month, will help position the operator for further growth.“The strong trading performance of the group means that any potential costs in 2019 associated with the new sports licences are expected to be fully mitigated,” he said. “The board therefore remains confident of delivering EBITDA and operating profit in-line with expectations for the full year.” Finance Tags: Online Gambling OTB and Betting Shops Topics: Finance Sports betting 17th July 2019 | By contenteditor Subscribe to the iGaming newslettercenter_img GVC boosted by online growth as revenue climbs in first half AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter GVC Holdings has cited growth within its online gambling business as the main reason behind a 5% year-on-year increase in net gaming revenue during the six months to June 30, 2019, despite a decline in revenue within the operator’s UK retail arm. Gambling to become compulsory element of PSHE education

first_imgPeople Topics: People Email Address Education on gambling will become a compulsory element of the UK Department of Education’s personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum from the start of the next school year. From September 2020 schools will be required to teach children about the risks of gambling, such as the risks of addiction and the potential to get into debt through the activity. While guidelines on the new curriculum were first published in June last year, and the Department of Education advised schools to adopt them from September 2019, it is only in 2020 that it becomes compulsory. It comes as part of a broader drive to educate young people on the similarities between the online and physical worlds, with a view to ensure they are able to be a discerning consumer of information online. To support the roll-out the PSHE Association, which provides advice, training and resources to teachers across the country, has developed a series of lesson plans. The most recent, published in late February and developed in partnership with GambleAware, aim to give minors a better understanding of risk and probability.Previous plans set out how to recognise risky behaviours and understand the role and influence of advertising.Minister of state for school standards Nick Gibb explained that the Department of Education wanted to help schools ensure young people were equipped with knowledge to prepare them for adult live, including risks associated with harmful behaviour and addiction.“Many schools, through existing Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, already teach about the dangers of gambling – including the psychological and financial impact,” Gibb explained. “But I want to ensure every child understands the risks, which is why we are making Health Education – including issues such as addiction and cumulative debt – compulsory from September.” Gambling to become compulsory element of PSHE education Education on gambling will become a compulsory element of the UK Department of Education’s personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum from the start of the next school year. GC pledges regulatory changes by September 2020

first_img Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Sports betting Bingo Tags: Online Gambling The British Gambling Commission has set out five key priorities for its 2020-21 business year, saying that it will aim to introduce new regulatory requirements by the end of the year’s second quarter, which ends on 30 September, 2020. 1st April 2020 | By Daniel O’Boyle AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Regions: UK & Ireland GC pledges regulatory changes by September 2020 Bingo The British Gambling Commission has set out five key priorities for its 2020-21 financial year, and revealing that it will aim to introduce new regulatory requirements by the end of the year’s second quarter, which ends on 30 September, 2020.The regulator’s business plan, published on the first day of the new financial year (1 April), sees the Commission set out its priorities for the coming year. It aims to continue to protect the interests of consumers, and prevent both players and the general public suffer from gambling-related harm. It also aims to raise standards in the market, optimise returns to good causes from lotteries, and to improve the way to governs the market.“We begin a new financial year in extraordinary circumstances, the [novel coronavirus (Covid-19)] will bring significant challenges for us all, including the gambling industry,” Commission chief executive Neil McArthur (pictured) said. “With social distancing measures in place people are more likely to feel isolated and now more than ever operators must ensure that consumer safety is paramount.”Perhaps the most eye-catching pledge, as part of efforts to protect consumers’ interests, is the commitment to introducing new regulatory requirements “where appropriate” by the end of the second quarter. This would be by 30 September. This followed Commission chief executive Neil McArthur pledging a review of online slot stakes within six months at a hearing of the Gambling Related Harm All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) in February this year. This will take into account the findings of working groups established to assess industry challenges, such as VIP management, product design and advertising. A series of leading operators and suppliers are involved in these projects, including Playtech, Scientific Games, GVC Holdings and The Stars Group-owned Sky Betting and Gaming. The regulator will also advise Oliver Dowden,  Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, on the government’s planned review of the 2005 Gambling Act. However, with the scope and scale of the review yet to be determined, it was unable to offer a timescale for this element.“We look forward to supporting the Government’s planned review of the Gambling Act,” McArthur said. “We are already working hard to take account of the findings of the recent National Audit Office report into gambling regulation.”To prevent harm, the regulator said it would establish an ‘experts by experience’ advisory board, consisting of people who have experience of gambling-related harm, by the end of the second quarter.“Their advice will ensure that the voice of consumers, particularly those who have experienced harm, more fully informs decisions at the heart of our organisation,” McArthur explained. The Commission will also publish an evaluation of its actions to minimise harm to children and review its approach to measuring gambling participation and prevalence. Both of these goals are to be achieved by the end of the financial year, or March 31, 2021.“Gambling related harm must be drastically reduced,” McArthur added. “If operators cannot protect their customers from harm then we are ready and willing to act, if necessary, using our powers to suspend and revoke operating and personal licences.”In order to raise standards in the gambling market, the Commission pledged to take targeted action to improve standards in the remote gambling sector throughout the year, delivering a series of events and initiatives to support the roll-out of these new actions.“Despite the challenges we all face, we must continue to make progress in these areas and wherever possible take opportunities to make gambling safer, especially online,” McArthur said. “We want to support collaboration and reduce the risk of progress being held up by the slowest, the least willing or the lowest common denominator.”The regulator also promised to protect against threats to betting integrity for international sports events hosted in Great Britain, and to implement the EU’s 5th Money Laundering Directive before the end of the year.As part of its pledge to optimise returns to good causes from lotteries, the Commission said it would respond to current National Lottery Camelot’s strategy to increase these returns. The regulator said it would also publish its conclusions following a consultation on prize limits to society lotteries during the second quarter of the year. The tender for the next National Lottery licence, meanwhile, will begin in the second quarter, or before 30 June. The process was originally scheduled to start in March, before the Commission and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport revised this to the first half of the calendar year.“A major priority this year will be running a robust, fair and open competition for the next National Lottery licence,” McArthur said. “With the current licence ending in 2023, we are focussed on finding the right operator, who will innovate to engage players and protect them, run the National Lottery with integrity and continue maximising returns to good causes to benefit society.”In order to improve the way it regulates, the Gambling Commission said it would establish the case for changes to Gambling Commission fees and offer advice to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport on a possible reform to the current structure. For the 2020-21 year, the Commission expects the betting industry to be its largest source of income, contributing 31% in licence fees. Casinos follow are next at 29%, followed by gambling software suppliers at 16%.Gaming machine suppliers and lotteries are both expected to contribute 7%, arcades 6% and bingo 4%.In addition, the regulator said it would publish clearer documentation about its corporate governance process by the midpoint of the year and improve the licence application process by the year’s end.McArthur also added that the Commission will get tougher in 2020-21 when it comes to acting against those who violate terms of the licence conditions, codes of practice and guidance.“People are only granted a licence following a detailed investigation into their suitability and we make our expectations very clear through licence conditions, codes of practice and guidance,” McArthur said. “Our compliance assessments will ensure that licensees comply with both the letter and spirit of the regulations.“Those who fail to meet our expectations will find our approach to enforcement getting even tougher than it has been to date.”The regulator acknowledged that the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) situation may make it difficult to achieve some of its goals, and so a revised plan may be issued after it reviews the first quarter of the year. Survey claims strong fan support for gambling sponsorship ban

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Gambling sponsorship in football has drawn criticism from anti-industry groups such as the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling-Related Harm, which called for a ban on all kinds of gambling advertising, as well as by the House of Lords, called for a ban specifically on gambling sponsorship in sport. Sponsorship Regions: UK & Ireland The whistle-to-whistle ban was introduced on 1 August 2019 aftering being announced by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling in December 2018. Survey claims strong fan support for gambling sponsorship ban “While betting helps to provide sports such as football with funding, it also enables TV channels to broadcast more sport than would otherwise be possible and plays a vital role in differentiating legally licensed operators from those in the black market who have none of the safety protections in place with UK operators,” the BGC spokesperson said. A spokesperson for industry body the Betting and Gaming Council, however, said that advertising in football is a necessary measure in order to both support the broadcast of football in the UK and keep players within the regulated market. A total of 67% of respondents said the ban “has not prevented children seeing gambling brands in football”. Those who disagreed totalled 9% of those polled. The survey found a similar portion of respondents calling specifically for a ban on gambling sponsorship, with 47% agreeing that “Gambling companies shouldn’t be allowed to sponsor football clubs”, including 24% who strongly agreed. On the other hand, 32% of respondents disagreed, including 13% who strongly disagreed. When given the statement “I wouldn’t buy my club’s shirt if it had a gambling logo on it”, 34% agreed, but a larger portion disagreed, with 44% suggesting they would still buy the shirts. “The BGC has introduced tough new measures to further prevent under-18s viewing betting ads online and our members have agreed that at least 20% of their TV and radio adverts must be safer gambling messages. A new survey from Clean up Gambling, a body lobbying for stricter regulation of the British gambling industry, claims that fans broadly support an end to gambling’s commercial involvement in football. When presented with the statement, “All gambling advertising, sponsorship and promotion in football should end”, 44% of respondents said they agreed, of whom 21% strongly agreed. Meanwhile, 34% disagreed, with 13% saying they did so strongly. Similarly, 66% of respondents said there were too many gambling advertisements connected to football on television, whereas just 16% disagreed with this statement. A previous poll commissioned by Clean Up Gambling in June claimed the British public is strongly in favour of new restrictions including a stake limit for online slots and a deposit limit for all operators. The poll found that 79% of those surveyed supported stake limits, with 25% in favour of a limit between £1.00 and £1.99 and 30% a limit between £2.00 and £4.99. Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter When asked if there were too many football teams sponsored by gambling businesses, 59% of respondents said they agreed, compared to 19% that disputed this assertion.  Topics: Legal & compliance Marketing & affiliates Sports betting Regulation Sponsorship 12th October 2020 | By Daniel O’Boyle The BGC spokesperson added that its members have taken steps to ensure gambling advertising is responsible and awaits the expected review of the 2005 Gambling Act. In 2019, the English Football League’s supporter survey found that 62% of Football League fans found gambling sponsorship, “acceptable with suitable safeguards to protect the young and problem gamblers”. A further 9% found gambling sponsorship deals “acceptable under all circumstances’. The figures were very similar when it came to gambling advertising in football stadiums. Again, 59% of respondents agreed that operators’ branding had too much of a presence in stadiums, with 18% disagreeing. Although research from Enders Analysis noted the industry’s “whistle-to-whistle” ban, which prevents operators from showing gambling advertisements during live sport before the 9pm watershed, has cut the number of ads seen by children by 97%, respondents said this did not go far enough.  An invitation to complete the Survation poll was sent to football supporters across the UK, with 1,006 opting to respond. “The BGC is determined to drive up standards across the betting and gaming industry and looks forward to working with the Government on its forthcoming gambling review to do just that.” Email Addresslast_img read more

Veikkaus profit down 32.6% in 2020 with slot arcades closed

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the year was €1.26bn, down 25.5%, and the operator said the pandemic had reduced its GGR by more than €300m throughout the year. The operator also introduced a €500 maximum daily loss limit for “fast-paced online games” such as online lottery games, slots, bingo and table games, with an exception for poker. The loss limit is expected to remain in place until at least March 2021. “To Veikkaus, just as to many other companies, the year of the coronavirus was challenging; however, it was also a year of positive, remarkable solutions that have enabled the building of a more responsible gaming environment.” The operator said the main reason for the decrease was disruption to the business caused by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which saw slot machines closed entirely or in part for a total of around five months. Of the total gaming figure, 58.1% was authenticated, using ID checks. The proportion of slot gaming which was authenticated was just 11.5% after the operator piloted ID requirements for slots from October. In January of this year, it rolled this requirement out nationwide. Veikkaus profit down 32.6% in 2020 with slot arcades closed Of the total GGR, 56.6% came from the points of sale of the operator’s retail network, while 43.4% came from its digital channel, up 11.6%. The increased share attributed to the digital channel occurred as a result of a drop in the share of point-of-sales gaming following slot machine closures, the operator said. The operator also began to prepare for the compulsory identification of players across all of its games in 2020, which it hopes to enforce by 2023. The total Finnish gambling market saw GGR of €1.59bn, down 21%, meaning Veikkaus’ market share was around 80%. The average prevalence of problem gambling in the country, according to two surveys commissioned from the Taloustutkimus market research company, was around 2.5%. “The updated strategy is based on an even safer and more responsible Gaming environment, said Hanna Kyrki, SVP legal affairs and CSR. Regions: Finland In addition to the slot closures, revenues were affected by the lack of professional sports worldwide which caused a reduction in the availability of betting markets. “We had to take major, even difficult, decisions, on a tight schedule at Veikkaus due to the coronavirus epidemic in 2020, in order to protect the health of our staff, customers, and retailers,” said Regina Sippel, the operator’s chief financial officer. Finnish state-owned operator Veikkaus has published its results for the financial year 2020, showing a total profit of €680.2m (£586.4m/$819.6m), down 32.6% on the previous year. The operator’s strategy and CSR programme were updated in 2020, with a focus on player responsibility. The operator’s share of the total online market was around 63%, and the total amount wagered on Veikkaus games was around €8.20bn. Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Full year results 2020 Veikkaus said that even when slot machines were open, outside the four months of closure in spring and again in large parts of the country from November, a smaller proportion of the machines was allowed to open, in order to ensure a safe distance between the machines as required by Covid-19 safety measures. One of the major changes made to its policy was a reduction in the total number of slot machines on its retail network, by around 8,000, or 40% of its machines. The maximum number of machines permitted in one location is now 4, whereas previously the largest retail units could have up to 15 slot machines. Email Addresslast_img read more
