MR slams international critisism

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says international criticism about the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake is unfounded.Speaking to media heads at Temple Trees last night, the President maintained that the impeachment process was fair. He also said that a committee will be appointed to look at constitutional amendments. (Colombo Gazette)

Speaker defends Police action near Parliament

Parliament was also told that there was a fear the protesters may surround Parliament and that was a threat to Parliament. The Speaker said that the protesters were allowed to protest on the side of the road but instead they had protested in the middle of the road. The joint opposition said that several members of Parliament were prevented from leaving Parliament by the Police during the protest.The Speaker said that he never issued instructions to the Police to block any Parliamentarian. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today defended Police action near Parliament on Saturday during an opposition protest.Jayasuriya told Parliament today that the Police had used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protest as they had violated a court order. However he said he will not interfere with Police action to provide security to Parliament. The Speaker however said he will meet the opposition to discuss their concerns. (Colombo Gazette) read more
