‘Roy Hodgson must stay as England manager until World Cup 2018’, insists former captain

first_imgFormer England captain Terry Butcher believes Roy Hodgson should be handed a new contract up until the Russia World Cup in 2018.Hodgson’s current contract is up after next summer’s European Championships in France and the FA have made it clear there will be no further discussions on an extension until after the tournament. There have been reports circulating that the FA will turn to a foreign manager after France 2016, but Butcher insists that would be a “disaster” and it must be Hodgson to carry on nurturing the youthful England team.“With the younger players coming through, they respect him and the chemistry is right around the squad, both on and off the pitch,” Butcher told Drivetime.“He should have one more tournament after this to take this young group though to the World Cup finals. That would be ideal, rather than have someone else come in and the whole philosophy change round.“They’re talking about having a foreign manager coming in but I think that would be a disaster. We’ve got Roy in there now, he’s settled, the chemistry’s right, he’s got the young players playing, everybody wants to play for England again and there’s a spirit and a passion about the team as well.“We don’t have any real world class players but what we do have is a team that shows passion, fights for the jersey and that’s something that the fans can relate to very well.”last_img read more
