Are Humans Still Evolving?

first_imgScience Now asks the question, “are humans still evolving?”  Comparisons of genes and chromosomes between different people groups from Asia, Europe and Africa are challenging the view that there is one human genome.  Some long stretches of DNA are inverted in some groups, and women so affected seem to have more children on average, even though the section isn’t related to fertility.  Oxford statistician Peter Donnelly says of these surprising findings, “This could be the tip of several icebergs.”So “The Human Genome” may be a myth.  Perhaps DNA storage is more dynamic than we expected.  The story does not establish any connection to evolution by natural selection except by assuming evolution and its commonly-accepted time scale.  Notice this non-sequitur: at the end, Donnelly says, “If such inversions are common, then there isn’t just one version of the human genome… this shows natural selection is still acting on us.”  Come again?  We’re here, we have differences, therefore we evolved?  Get a grip, Pete.(Visited 5 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

It will be built in two phases, with the first section scheduled to open in 2012 and the second in 2015.The warehouse will house about 110 000 different parts and components to serve Toyota’s local and overseas market.Of the 800 new jobs to be created, 650 will be involved in the management, selection and distribution of parts. About 440 people will be hired to help construct the facility.CEO of Toyota South Africa, Johan van Zyl, said: “The development of a distribution warehouse of this size and scale is one of the clearest signs that we are committed to South Africa and intent on remaining South Africa’s most popular vehicle manufacturer.“In making this a reality, we believe that the government, through the actions of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Automotive Production and Development Programme, has created a stable and predictable environment in which we as manufacturers can make investments such as the one that we are announcing,” added Van Zyl.The project is a partnership between Toyota and Investec Property Limited, the property arm of Investec, a specialist bank and asset manager.David Rosmarin of Investec Property said: “Site selection was critical due to location, size and accessibility. Although the market widely expected an increase in vehicle sales prior to the 2010 World Cup, we did not expect the market to continue at the same pace after July and in some instances even increase the rate of growth.”According to Van Zyl, Toyota had hoped to grow its sales by 20% from 2009, but it exceeded that and reached 24.7%.Although Toyota had to recall some of its stock due to faulty accelerator cables in 2010, the effects of the recall were not felt.Living up to its slogan, “Lead the way”, Toyota has been able to achieve remarkable results over the last three decades.Specialised bankingInvestec was founded by Larry Nestadt, Errol Grolman and Ian Kanto in 1974 in Johannesburg.Today the financing and asset management company operates from three principal markets, South Africa, the UK and Australia, and employs about 6 000 people.Since acquiring its banking licence in 1980, it has bought up many other small companies, including the London-based Allied Trust Bank Limited in 1992 and Reichmans Limited, a finance trade company, in 1990.The company is listed on the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges and sponsors rugby, football, horse racing and tennis in all the countries from which it operates.last_img read more

Rumor: Canon to Announce the Cinema EOS C200 and 6D Mark II

first_imgNow, keep in mind, until we get any actual announcements, these are still just rumors. That said, speculation is always fun. Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on these new rumors. Canon may have a new cinema camera and new DSLR on the horizon.Update: Canon has officially announced the Canon C200. Read about it here. Some exciting updates to our original Camera Rumors of 2017 post. It doesn’t look like we will see the Canon Cinema EOS C100 Mark III this year after all, but rather the all new C200.According to Canon Rumors, a “pretty loaded” C200 that can shoot 4K footage will be announced in the coming months. Based on the upcoming event schedule, we can expect to hear the announcement at Cinegear on or around the first of June. We’re told from one of our retail sources that the next camera body from Canon is going to be the Cinema EOS C200. — Canon RumorsIt’s not yet known if the C200 will replace the C100 Mark II or if it will be an addition to the Cinema EOS line. Knowing how Canon has marketed their past few cameras, I’ll be shocked if the C200 comes out at a reasonable market price. I’m expecting the camera to come in around the $7,000-$9,000 range, even though it should really be around $5,000-$6,000.Our original predictions and rumors suggested the following specs for what we originally assumed would be the C100 Mark III.4K video recording up to 60fps1080p up to 120fpsSuper 35mm CMOS SensorPL + EF MountISO 100-102,400CFast + SD Card SlotsXF-AVC/MPEG-4 AVC/H.264/ProResRAW capture with external recorderNew anamorphic lens announced alongside its release Image via Canon Rumors. In other camera news, we also expect Canon to announce the Canon 6D Mark II around the same June-July timeline with a shipping date somewhere in August of 2017. Based on the recent addition of C-log to the 5D Mark IV, we assume that the 6D Mark II will also be able to shoot in C-log. The 5D Mark IV requires a $99 upgrade fee for C-log, so it’s unknown if that capability will be available for the 6D Mark II at launch.Original Rumored 6D Mark II Specs:4K up to 30fps1080p up to 60fps25 MP sensorDual SD card slotsArticulating screenNew super-telephoto lensTo be announced spring-summer 2017last_img read more

Yeddyurappa to induct six ministers, drops three

first_imgSetting the stage for Wednesday’s expansion and reshuffle of his ministry, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa sacked three ministers on Tuesday, ignoring suicide threat by one of them.In the much-awaited reshuffle, Yeddyurappa would induct six ministers, going ahead with his resolve to restructure the 28-month old BJP Ministry, the first ever in the south.Ministers Goolihatti Shekar (Sports), who has threatened to commit suicide if removed, Shivanagouda Naik (Adult Education) and Aravind Limbavali (Higher Education) were shown the door by Yeddyurappa, who also faced threat of resignations by ministerial aspirants to quit their assembly membership if not accommodated in the cabinet.A day after consulting the party central leadership on the exercise, Yeddyurappa recommended the sacking of the three ministers to Governor H R Bhardwaj, who promptly accepted it.An appeal by Tourism Minister and mining magnate G Janardhana Reddy, who was the rallying point for dissidents last year, not to drop Shekar, Limbavali and Naik met with an outright rejection.Shobha Karandlaje, who fell victim to dissident activity launched by Reddy last year and a close confidant of Yeddyurappa, is all set to return to the ministry tomorrow.Others who will be sworn in on Wednesday are V Somanna, C H Vijayashanakr, A Ramdas, A Narayanaswamy and C C Patil.Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. Photo: PTIYeddyurappa was reportedly furious with Shekar, an independent who supported the BJP at the time of formation of the government in 2008, for issuing the suicide threat.Similar was the fate of Naik, who had threatened to quit his assembly membership if he was dropped.advertisementLimbavali, who initially ignored the directive to resign seeking Reddy’s support for continuance, however, ultimately yielded and sent in his resignation letter, but it was too late as Yeddyurapa had already recommended his sacking.C T Ravi, a strong aspirant for ministerial berth, submitted his resignation to his assembly membership to the Speaker’s office, after his claim was ignored, but it was yet to be accepted. Speaker K G Bopaiah is abroad now.Suspected supporters of Ravi, pelted stones at three buses on the outskirts of Chikmagalur today to vent their anger over denial of ministerial post to their leader. In another development police foiled an attempt by a supporter of Shekar to consume poison in front the residence of Health Minister B Sreeramulu.last_img read more

From the Editor-in-Chief

first_imgTo understand India Today’s Newsmaker of the Year 2017, one has to go back to 2006, when he was 18. Representing Delhi, Virat Kohli played for his team against Karnataka the day after his father’s death and went on to score 90, going directly to the funeral after he was dismissed. Many, including his mother, believe that was a turning point in his life, the day when his father’s dream became his own. Looking at him now, dressed in designer clothes with one of India’s topmost actors by his side as his wife, being feted by the high and mighty of the land, it is hard to imagine his origins, in one of Delhi’s undistinguished middle class neighbourhoods, driven to practice every day by his criminal lawyer father. What transformed him into becoming the only player in the world with an incredible above-50 average in all three formats of the game; captain of India with his nominees installed as coach and support staff; the most powerful cricketer in the world’s richest cricketing nation and the man most likely to overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s batting records? And that’s just in cricket. His influence extends far beyond. His fitness regimen has revolutionised the team’s physical strength and prompted Virat to make it a national mission. His carefully chosen endorsements have ensured that he is one of India’s most saleable celebrities with a brand value of $144 million (Rs 936 crore). And his confidence on the field has given encouragement to many who still regard cricket as a white man’s game. His 2,818 international runs in 2017 are the third highest ever in history; he has nine back-to-back series wins as captain; and six 200-plus scores in the past 17 months, special by even his own super-achiever standards. But that is not the only reason india today picked him as newsmaker in a year crowded with potential candidates. The year 2017 is when India grappled with the aftermath of demonetisation, the incomprehensible Goods and Services Tax, and interminable state elections. With his winning streak, Virat lifted the mood of the nation in a difficult year. Above all, he epitomises the wishful meritocracy of a New India, where everyone who works hard can flourish regardless of their history, geography and sociology; where the country can take on the most powerful in the world with equal aggression; and where young people have the freedom to love whomsoever, wherever and however they wish. India Today TV Consulting Editor Boria Majumdar who has tracked Virat’s career closely says he looks fully immersed in the moment, at peace with himself, in his gym, at training, in marriage and between those 22 yards. In his assessment of Virat, he writes: “Virat is fashioning a young Indian side in the same mould of utter self-belief, and it’s seems to be paying off. So far.”Choosing Virat wasn’t easy. As you’ll see from the list of runners-up, there was tough competition. The Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo that won critical state elections in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, capping the year with the principal opposition party, Congress, in power in a mere five states. Rahul Gandhi, who finally became Congress president, after 13 years in politics, and many false starts. S.S. Rajamouli, who directed the blockbuster Baahubali 2, very much a made-in-India epic. And the badminton stars whose inordinate success has seen Indians in the top five of the men’s and women’s championships for the first time.Virat’s rise is also a tribute to the emergence of a serious sporting culture in the country. He is a supremely talented cricketer, but he is also invested in sports ranging from football to tennis. He’s involved in a chain of gyms as well as a children’s fitness venture. As one half of the most famous couple in the country at present, he has also shown us the power of social media. Breaking the Internet with photographs and videos from the no-media wedding in Tuscany, Italy, and instructing us on how a celebrity can take control of his own narrative. India is, after all, the land of storytellers, and Virat’s tale is perhaps one of the most compelling in recent times. We all live vicariously through the lives of famous people and few things brought us as much cheer as the smiling faces of Virat and his wife Anushka Sharma. My best wishes to them. On that happy note, I wish all our readers a happy and healthy new year.last_img read more

HBOs Watchmen ComicCon trailer goes deep into masked vigilante war

first_img Comic-Con 0 TV and Movies Comics Comments The very best cosplay we saw at Comic-Con 2019 The trailer opens with a vigilante crashing into a convenience store being robbed by a gunman — but this isn’t your fun Shazam-type hero moment. For one, the vigilante wears a noose around his neck. We cut to a Rorschach-inspired mask-wearing vigilante, who says, “soon they will shout, ‘Save us.’ And we will whisper, ‘No.'”  The best San Diego Comic-Con celebrity disguises 3:00 Very ominous. HBO Damon Lindelof, best known for creating The Leftovers, is the man helming HBO’s Watchmen. A new trailer for this sequel (of sorts) to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel snuck up on San Diego Comic-Con, despite the absence of a panel. 62 Photoscenter_img More from HBO and Comic-Con HBO HBO’s Watchmen series: New teaser trailer, release date, cast and plot Every Comic-Con San Diego 2019 trailer: Picard, Netflix’s The Witcher, It 2, Top Gun sequel HBO’s His Dark Materials lights up Comic-Con with a new trailer Share your voice Tags Originally published July 20, 11:15 a.m. PT.  Now playing: Watch this: The masks, the vigilantes, Ozymandias — they’re all familiar to fans of the graphic novel, but Lindelof isn’t exactly adapting it. Well, at least that’s what he implied in an open letter to fans. Instead of retreading “sacred ground,” he’s going to remix it. The TV series is an original sequel set in the Watchmen world, where new masks and new characters will take the stage.Regina King plays Angela Abraham, Jeremy Irons plays an older Ozymandias, Jean Smart plays Agent Blake — and that’s pretty much all we know about the new cast of characters. A war seems to be in the cards between vigilantes and the police, who — twist! — have also jumped on the mask-wearing bandwagon.Watchmen is set to arrive on HBO sometime in October, 2019.last_img read more
